Travel history for your citizenship application: what to list

To apply for citizenship, you list every absence from Canada in the five years before the day you sign, whatever the reason, with exact dates. That includes same-day trips to the United States, travel for work, and trips from before you became a permanent resident that fall inside those five years.

Checked against IRCC’s pages on 17 October 2026. Sources: Physical presence calculator: frequently asked questions, Record your trips outside Canada (travel journal), CBSA: Travel History Report, Application for Canadian Citizenship – Adults (CIT 0002).

What to list

Finding dates you don’t remember

IRCC points to your passport and to records such as bank statements and travel itineraries. Its travel journal is a way to keep them as you go — the day you left and the day you came back, the countries, and why. It isn’t sent with your application.

The border’s own record

The Canada Border Services Agency keeps a record of your entries into Canada and your exits. For a citizenship application you don’t need to ask for it: IRCC can collect it on your behalf when it needs it. More in your CBSA travel history report.

Questions on the application that look like travel

  • Address history. Every address inside and outside Canada in the five years, with no gaps — not hotels or places you stayed on holiday. An application with gaps here is returned as incomplete.
  • Police certificates. One from each country other than Canada where you were for 183 days or more in a row in the past four years, since you turned 18.
  • Status in other countries. Each country where you have held immigration, permanent resident or citizen status, what status it was, and its dates.
