IRCC’s physical presence calculator: with a login, and without
On the way to citizenship, IRCC’s physical presence calculator now lives in the online account: if you apply online, you can only use it after you create your account, and you must use that one. To check whether you have your 1,095 days before then, IRCC still links its calculator for paper applications, which opens without signing in.
Checked against IRCC’s pages on 17 October 2026. Sources: Apply for citizenship: calculate your physical presence, Physical presence calculator: frequently asked questions, Canadian citizenship: who can apply, IRCC Help Centre: recalculating after a returned application.
Which one to use
- Applying online: the calculator in your online account, in its “Physical presence calculator” section.
- Applying on paper: the online calculator for paper applications, printed and sent with your application — IRCC recommends it — or the manual form, CIT 0407.
- Checking before you apply online: IRCC’s calculator for paper applications. You still do the count again in your account to apply.
The calculator for paper applications asks for an email address only if you want to save a calculation and come back to it.
What either one asks for
- The date you will sign your application: the five years before it are the ones counted.
- Your time in Canada before PR, as a temporary resident or protected person, if you had any.
- Every absence from Canada in those five years, with exact dates — same-day trips to the United States included.
- Where you went and why, for each absence: the calculator for paper applications asks for both.
Get your dates together first
This calculator counts in your browser, by the rules on IRCC’s pages, and sends nothing you type. It is an estimate: use it to put your dates in order, then enter them in IRCC’s.

Before you submit
Count again on the day you sign. The date of application in the calculation must be the date you sign your application; if they differ, the application can come back to you. If an online application is returned, you update the calculation in your account before you send it again.
