Guides · Time before PR

Does time before PR count towards citizenship?

Yes, by half. On the way to citizenship, each day you were in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person, inside the five years before you sign, counts as half a day — up to 365 days of credit, which takes 730 days in Canada before PR.

Checked against IRCC’s pages on 17 October 2026. Sources: Canadian citizenship: who can apply, Physical presence calculator: frequently asked questions, Application for Canadian Citizenship – Adults (CIT 0002).

Who counts as a temporary resident

Someone with valid status in Canada as a visitor, a student, a worker or a temporary resident permit holder. A protected person — whose refugee or asylum claim, or pre-removal risk assessment, was approved — counts from the day of the approval until the day before they became a permanent resident.

What doesn’t count

  • Days in Canada without status as a temporary resident, protected person or permanent resident (calculator FAQ).
  • The time waiting for a decision on a refugee claim — even with a work or study permit issued during the claim, which doesn’t give temporary resident status.
  • Days outside Canada before PR. They are absences, and you declare them like any other.
  • Days before the five-year window.

Worked through

Say you studied and then worked in Canada for 730 days, with no trips, inside the five years before you sign. 730 × 0.5 = 365 days of credit: the most there is. Stay 900 days before PR and the credit is still 365.

You still need at least 730 days as a permanent resident in the window. So the credit can bring your date closer by up to 365 days, and never to less than 730 days after you became a PR.

    Telling IRCC

IRCC’s calculator asks whether you were in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before PR, then for each period you had that status. Declaring it lets you count every day you can.
