Worked cases · The PR card’s 730
PR card expiring after 14 months away: do you still have the 730?
By this count, yes, with room: 14 months away in your first five years as a PR leaves 1,401 days in Canada by 20 January 2027, the fifth anniversary — 671 more than the 730 the residency obligation asks for.
Checked against the Government of Canada’s pages on 18 October 2026. Sources: Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, section 28, Understand permanent resident status, Guide 5445: applying for a permanent resident card.

The calculator opens on this case’s dates, on the PR card — unless you kept your own dates in this browser, which it opens on instead. Its PR card figure is the count as things stand today; the page counts the case on the dates it names. Change any date to make the count yours.

The days left
Every day, five years
19 Oct 2021 – 18 Oct 2026 · 1,826 days
The five years start 19 Oct 2021, but nothing counts before 20 Jan 2022, so the calendar starts there. The window slides with the date.
Every day from 19 October 2021 to 18 October 2026. 1 trip taken, 425 days away in all. By this count, the 1,095 days are there on 20 March 2026. Today is 18 October 2026. Brazil: 1 Aug 2024 to 1 Oct 2025, 425 days away.
Worked through
Say you became a PR on 20 January 2022 and spent 1 August 2024 to 1 October 2025 in Brazil: 425 full days away. Before your fifth anniversary, the question is whether you will be able to reach 730 days in the five years after you became a PR — the days from 20 January 2022 to 19 January 2027.
Staying in Canada from your return, those five years hold 1,401 days: the trip’s 425 days away still leave 671 to spare. The date printed on the card plays no part in the count.
The card and the status are two things. An expired card doesn’t end your PR status, but you need a valid card, or a travel document, to board a flight back to Canada.
What would change the answer
- From the fifth anniversary on, the window rolls: each renewal looks at the five years before you apply, so this trip counts against you until it leaves that window.
- Even away every day from 18 October 2026 until 20 January 2027, the five years would still hold 1,308 days: the days already in Canada are enough.
- Planning another long stay first? Try it: six months abroad and the 730.
