Frequent work trips abroad: how far do they push citizenship?
By this count, by every full day away. Eight work trips, 108 days abroad in all, put a PR since 3 October 2022 at 18 January 2026 instead of 2 October 2025. Travel for work is declared like any other absence.

Every day, five years
19 Oct 2021 – 18 Oct 2026 · 1,826 days
The five years start 19 Oct 2021, but nothing counts before 3 Oct 2022, so the calendar starts there. The window slides with the date.
Every day from 19 October 2021 to 18 October 2026. 8 trips taken, 108 days away in all. By this count, the 1,095 days are there on 18 January 2026. Today is 18 October 2026. Worked through
Two-week trips, out on a Monday and back on the Friday after, are 10 days away each; the three-week ones 17. The days you fly out and fly back are days in Canada, as IRCC counts them.
With nothing before PR, the five years before 18 January 2026 need 1,095 days in Canada, all as a PR: the date waits 108 days for the trips.
Many short trips don’t add up to a long stay: the police certificate is for 183 days or more in a row in one country, and CIT 0002’s own example — ten three-week trips to the US — needs none.
What would change the answer
- For the PR card, full-time work abroad for a Canadian employer can count as days in Canada; for citizenship only a Crown servant’s time abroad does: working abroad for a Canadian employer.
- Trips across the border and back the same day cost nothing, and are still declared: same-day trips to the US.
