Worked cases · The PR card’s 730
Your first five years as a PR: how much time abroad is left?
By this count, all of it. Say you became a PR on 15 August 2023 and have taken two trips, 84 days away in all: even away every day from 18 October 2026 to 15 August 2028, the five years after your PR date would hold 1,077 days in Canada — and a PR for less than five years needs to be able to reach 730.
Checked against the Government of Canada’s pages on 18 October 2026. Sources: Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, section 28, IRCC Help Centre: can my time abroad count toward my PR status?.
This case in the calculator
The calculator opens on this case’s dates, on the PR card — unless you kept your own dates in this browser, which it opens on instead. Its PR card figure is the count as things stand today; the page counts the case on the dates it names. Change any date to make the count yours.

The days left
Every day, five years
6 Nov 2021 – 5 Nov 2026 · 1,826 days
The five years start 6 Nov 2021, but nothing counts before 15 Aug 2023, so the calendar starts there. The window slides with the date.
Every day from 6 November 2021 to 5 November 2026. 2 trips taken, 84 days away in all. By this count, the 1,095 days are there on 6 November 2026. Today is 18 October 2026. Mexico: 15 Dec 2024 to 10 Jan 2025, 25 days away. France: 1 Jul 2025 to 30 Aug 2025, 59 days away.
Worked through
The five years run from 15 August 2023 to 14 August 2028. Every day in them is a day in Canada unless you were away: the trips to Mexico (25 days) and France (59 days) take 84 days off, leaving 1,743.
Staying instead, they would hold 1,743. Either way the days already in Canada carry the 730 to the anniversary: they don’t have to be in a row, or the last ones.
What would change the answer
- After 15 August 2028, the question changes to the five years before each examination, a window that rolls: which five years count after five years as a PR.
- Citizenship counts the same days much more strictly — 1,095 in five years: how many days you can be outside Canada for citizenship.
- A planned stay is easier to judge as a plan: six months abroad and the 730.
