Worked cases · The PR card’s 730
PR for more than five years: which five years count for the 730?
By this count, it is the five years before the day you are examined — for a renewal, the day you apply. Applying on 2 November 2026, that is 2 November 2021 to 1 November 2026: 1,644 days in Canada, and the 387-day trip of 10 January 2020 to 1 February 2021 no longer counts at all.
Checked against the Government of Canada’s pages on 18 October 2026. Sources: Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, section 28, Guide 5445: applying for a permanent resident card.
This case in the calculator
The calculator opens on this case’s dates, on the PR card — unless you kept your own dates in this browser, which it opens on instead. Its PR card figure is the count as things stand today; the page counts the case on the dates it names. Change any date to make the count yours.

The days left
Every day, five years
19 Oct 2021 – 18 Oct 2026 · 1,826 days
Every day from 19 October 2021 to 18 October 2026. 2 trips taken, 569 days away in all. By this count, the 1,095 days are there on 22 February 2022. Today is 18 October 2026. Nigeria: 10 Jan 2020 to 1 Feb 2021, 387 days away. Nigeria: 1 Jun 2023 to 1 Dec 2023, 182 days away.
Worked through
Say you became a PR on 1 February 2018 and spent 10 Jan 2020 – 1 Feb 2021 and 1 Jun – 1 Dec 2023 in Nigeria. Had you renewed on 3 June 2024, the window would have been 3 June 2019 to 2 June 2024: both trips inside it, 1,258 days in Canada.
By 2 November 2026 the window has moved past the first trip. Only the 182 days of the second are left in it, so the count is 1,644, 914 more than 730.
On the PR card form, you list your absences from the past five years — the same window.
What would change the answer
- A border officer can examine the obligation on any day you arrive, on the five years before that day: the count changes with the day.
- In your first five years the question is different — whether you can still reach 730 by the fifth anniversary: how much time abroad is left.
- A long trip leaves the window day by day, not all at once: renewing after three years abroad works through it.
